What Next, A Plague of Locusts?
Once again, the weather doesn’t look good for Friday and Saturday — and that leaves our season, which started with such sunshine-filled momentum, dangerously close to running off the rails.
In fact, Howard and Doppler 9000 say there’s another flood watch in effect, expected to dump more rain on our already-soggy fields. Check Howard’s MMSL weather blog, and here, for the latest updates.

Well, like a good stuffing at dinner, it may be time to throw the white towel and put a fork in it. This season is over.

TRIPLE HEADERS!!!!!!
We’ve done it before, let’s do it again!!
May 16th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Let’s play the scedule as planned with having the 2 holidays off and let the wether do its thing and we will do are thing and see what happens. Triple headers, poker, beer pong, whatever it takes to finish the schedule.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:49 am
I AGREE.. TRIPLEHEADERS!!!
Nothing like a good old TripleHeader to get your blood pumping..
May 16th, 2008 at 8:57 am
as Banks used to say, let’s play three!
May 16th, 2008 at 9:36 am
are we just cancelling this week too?? TRIPLEHEADERS .. CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP .. TRIPLEHEADERS
May 16th, 2008 at 10:27 am
It is what it is…def worth the wait to play on good fields…if we have to play triples, we’ll play triples.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:29 am
if tripleheaders is what we have to do, it’s what we have to do. unless anyone can hire some helicopters to land on each of our fields to dry the saturated ground, we’re definitely looking at playing memorial day weekend and playing some tripleheaders…
May 16th, 2008 at 11:52 am
If we play triple headers, then the standard rules will need to be thrown out. That means the co-ed and total number of players needed rules will be need to be suspended.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Ditto the rules will need to be suspended/altered for Memorial Day games.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:59 am
IF we can’t play tomorrow…
memorial day games are a bad idea
triple headers will work, have worked in the past.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:59 am
MS, have you been appointed commissioner and I didn’t know about it? What are you talking about, the rules will need to be thrown out? No rules are being thrown out — you show up with your people. Not on Memorial Day weekend, because we’re not playing then. But if we have a tripleheader Saturday, standard rules apply. That’s what happened in 2003 and 2004. It ain’t perfect, but them’s the dog days.

Is there any reason the season can’t push into late July/early August with playoffs and such or do the fields get turned over to another league?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
I have a feeling we’ll be able to get the games going tomorrow.. According to the Mike Mattis Doppler 9001 we currently have overcast skies and the rain seems to have passed.. The Sun even showed it’s beautiful rays for a minute.. Everybody should go to bed tonight with the menatlity that we’re gonna play two tomorrow.. Have your Rake, Shovel and Kitty Litter crews ready to go.

Last I heard, Wheaton Forest more resembled a swimming pool than a softball field…
May 16th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Ah, Tripleheader Saturdays. Good times. Where madness ensues, hamstrings squeal and Salant’s schedule-making wizardly goes kaleidoscope.
August is traditionally off-base because of the large number of media member vacations in Washington when the Hill lets out.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
rules thrown out if there are tripleheaders?? LOL. that is hilarious…
May 16th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Just saw Doug Hill’s forecast and he’s giving a thumbs up to a perfect Saturday. Low to Mid 70’s with a slight breeze.. Sounds like Softball weather to me…
May 16th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
If you expand to triple headers, you cannot expect that a full team can ride out the entire length of the day. Those squealers may have no life, but some of us do.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Triple headers would started at 930 probably, so it should be ok. Play by the rules or don’t play. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
“let’s throw out the rules?” you’re an idiot … has your team ever made the playoffs? if so, you should know there’s many times in which you play 3 maybe 4 games in a day !! Rob, can we just scratch the rules for that since this clown says it’s okay? haha what a joke .. thanks for shutting that guy up .. and mike from abc news, go look at wheaton forest before it gets dark, NO WAY THAT FIELD WILL BE PLAYABLE, probably not til next week .. get your rake, shovel, and kitty litter for those fields, let me know how it works out …
amac, CSN
p.s. will we ever play again?? AHHHHHHH
May 16th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Dude! Somebody said the same thing about CV/Homewood one year and a combined effort got that field into shape before the 10a.m. start time.. What exactly is the problem at Wheaton Forest that a few bags of Kitty Litter and some dirt can’t fix?
May 16th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
It doesn’t really matter what tomorrow’s weather will be. It could be 120 degrees, the fields will never dry out in time — the damage has already been done.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
I’ll take your word for it. I haven’t been by Wheaton Forest so I can’t make any judgements..
May 16th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Hey, I see the Nats and O’s playing tonight. Who says we can’t tomorrow?
Of course, I’m the guy with 50 pounds of sand and 70 pounds of kitty litter sitting on my balcony. And I don’t even own a cat! Honestly, I don’t even like cats much.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
It’s just softball people…relax just a bit…commissioner what’s the call?
May 16th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
just hit Veirs Mill my fine softball peeps, and lemme tell ya, field 2 is not playable at all…field 1, maybe the infield could be saved, but the nail in the coffin is the swamp that consumes both outfields. sorry, but Veirs Mill will take a miracle…can’t put kitty litter out there and there is no way i want my outfielders rippin hammies, groins, or calves. believe me, i wanna play as bad as all of ya, but i just dont see it happenin.
peace,
cic

Maybe that it’s a terrible park and always has been?
May 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Layhill will need some work as well. It sounds like it’s in better shape than most of the other fields, especially field 2 which won’t need more than a few minutes of maintenance, but if the games go on tomorrow and you’re playing there, arrive early to help out a bit.
BTW, I blame the weatherguys on TV for calling for all this rain this week. Can’t you guys give us some good weather for a change?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
LOL!
May 17th, 2008 at 6:18 am
the right call was made everyone. kudos to Matt Sampson, chief field spotter, and to his faithful army of spotters. also, big props to the Commish on pullin the plug….painful reality but had to be done.
everyone have a safe memorial day weekend.
peace,

[…] hot debate on the Metropolitan Media Softball League blog, where CP LF Matt Smaldone has set off a firestorm of controversy by suggesting that in tripleheaders, the league’s normal rules, requiring, for instance, […]

I really only see one solution that makes any sense: On the first full day of fine weather and playable fields, pull off a dodecaheader: 12 games back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Also, throw out the rules — ALL the rules, even ones essential to the playing of the game, leaving it to the umpire’s discretion as to how a victor will be decided.
This way, we won’t have to use our rain dates, and, if we hold the dodecaheader on May 31, we won’t have to mess with the Dog Days Of June, either.
Any objections?

Wow, this is amazing. “amac” posts, saying, “however if you’ve got 100 bags of kitty litter and 25 illegals all carrying rakes and blowtorches, you can play tomorrow, let me know how it goes.”
I wrote a blog post that mentioned his charming language.
And now mysteriously amac’s comment has been changed. With no acknowledgment of the editing.
In a “media league.”
That said, anytime Express wants to play us we are ready for them. In fact, I’d love to play them 12 times in a row. I figure our odds would have to go up at some point.
